Annual Matter is a material research project exploring pinecones as an alternative forest resource for furniture and product design. Using annually recurring pinecone flows as a point of departure, the project investigates how non-timber biomass can be developed into structural and semi-structural materials through pressing, binding and composite processes. Through iterative testing, the project suggests pinecone-derived fibreboard, biocomposite and filament-based applications designed in dialogue with industrial manufacturing methods. The resulting artefacts—a chair, a lamp and a tray—demonstrate how a material proposition can be translated across scales and applications. Positioning pinecones as a resource rather than residue, the project proposes a design approach grounded in regenerative material flows and ecological thinking.
